2018 successfully ended with the invitation to Gallipoli by the staff of Caroli Hotels, which sponsored and organized the third edition of FIGiLo, the Festival of Local Journalism.
The event, scheduled in January, will last four days, one day more than the previous year, thanks to a richer program with guests and topics ranging from local journalism to fake news, professional deontology, citizen journalism and the role played by social media, with lectures held by journalists, directors, university professors and other people from the world of communication, who will discuss various topics, including, of course, constructive journalism.
Considering the crisis that hit the publishing sector, constructive journalism paves new ways for journalists and their profession, which is increasingly complex and criticised.
The world needs qualified and trained journalists, interlocutors and mediators as never before, since we are facing a revolution that has lasted for decades and has not settled yet. A revolution that fights and evolves day by day with the redundant power of the Internet and social networks.
The topics to be discussed during the Festival of Local Journalism will include two events relating to constructive journalism, in which Silvio Malvolti and Assunta Corbo – co-founders of the Italian Constructive Media Association (learn more) – will take part.
The first event will be a course for high school students and will be held on 24 January (10.30 -12.00 a.m.) The second experience is scheduled for 25 January (9.30-12.00 a.m.) and will consist of an introductory course intended for the members of the Journalists’ Association. The participants will learn about constructive journalism, its origin, the techniques used, the consequences of information deviating from the readers’ interest and the approach adopted by constructive journalism to solve problems.
Over the time, journalism turned news into a mere product to be sold (and attract the readers) to the extent that the news has lost its original function, i.e. providing useful elements to understand the reality.
Constructive journalism has already become a major trend in the Countries of northern Europe and has already spread in Denmark (through the DR national broadcaster), the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway (through the NRK national broadcaster), the United Kingdom (the BBC and The Guardian) and even in the United States (from The New York Times to the establishment of the Solutions Journalism Network).
The most significant initiatives that have promoted and encouraged this new form of journalism have gotten patronages by leading companies like Facebook and Google, as well as by the United Nations, and benefited from large-scale funding by large philanthropic foundations intended for training programs which supported a type of journalism oriented towards the readers and able to find solutions rather simply discussing problems.

This and other topics will be discussed during the Festival of Local Journalism (click here to see the program of the event), an important meeting attended also by the future journalists, i.e. high school students.
The event will be held at the Caroli Hotels Bellavista Club and is sponsored by the Journalists’ Association of Apulia, the Province of Lecce and the Municipality of Gallipoli.
