2018 has gone and it’s time for us to take stock of the situation. This is what we have done in the first 6 months of activity.
After a long gestation (it was September 2017 when the idea of an Italian association dealing with dissemination of constructive journalism slowly took shape), it’s time to draw a balance.
Last March, this new project took its first steps, aiming at challenging objectives with an uncertain outcome. Two presentation events held in Rome and Milan culminated with the establishment of the Italian Constructive Media Association in a country where publishing and journalism are particularly complex and vituperated sectors.
On that occasion, I had the chance to meet and get in touch with extraordinary people. Together with some of them, (the first supporters!), at the end of May, we have formally founded the Association, the first and only association focusing on the creation and dissemination of constructive journalism in Italy!
What is it about? It is a non-profit association able to interact with institutions, authorities, publishers, journalists and media professionals and discuss the ability of this kind of journalism to actually exert a large-scale impact, not only on readers but also on the publishing industry and journalism itself: thanks to this new approach, major international newspapers like the New York Times, and broadcasters like the BBC, the national Danish and Norwegian broadcaster (respectively, the DR and NRK) have already recovered the audience previously lost due to a constant focus on the bad news.
We want to bring about the same change. Before summer, we carried on a useful dialogue with the Journalists’ Association of Lombardy, which added a course on constructive journalism in the training program required for continuing professional education. The course was held also in October upon request of the Journalists’ Association of Emilia-Romagna and will be available soon in other regions.
In the last months, we have also submitted our projects to university students (in Italy, the first dissertation on constructive journalism was presented at the University of Lecce) and we have scheduled the first major event to be held in 2019, under the patronage of the University of Insubria and the National Council of the Italian Journalists’ Association.
