A training day reserved for journalists included in the continuous training program scheduled with the National Journalists Association, dedicated to constructive journalism and the tools to say NO to journalism of fear, YES to journalism of solutions. The meeting will be held on Tuesday 9 November 2021 from 9 to 13 at the University of Asti, and is organized by the Italian Constructive Media Association together with the local newsroom of Gazzetta d’Asti, where a laboratory session of constructive journalism will follow in the afternoon, reserved exclusively for the newsroom of the newspaper.
Faced with constantly screaming headlines about crises, corruption, violence, and scandals, many decide not to inquire anymore. This is not only bad for the publishing and news industry, but it harms democracy and society as a whole by destroying people’s trust, making it harder for us to imagine a better world.
The credibility of the media has never been so low: in Italy, according to a survey by the University of Insubria, the profession of journalist has become less credible than that of a hairdresser, and the credibility of a blogger is lower than that. of a caregiver. 55% of the sample argues that news no longer involves as before because it makes everything spectacular in order to have attention.
Every day each of us relies on the news to understand the world, be able to make appropriate choices about our lives, and make our contribution to society. But there is a problem: instead of helping us to take steps forward, the news often leaves us with a feeling of helplessness, frustration, anger, and even addiction, finally making us apathetic, disillusioned, and disinterested.
News shouldn’t be like this: it should also show how communities, institutions, organizations, and people work every day to improve the world we live in. Obviously, we will also always need good journalists who denounce the things that are wrong, guaranteeing the proper functioning of democracy and respect for the rights of all, but it is important that the news also helps us to see the solutions capable of responding to the problems that they are reported, telling what works and what doesn’t, and why.
We are the protagonists of a great change. More and more publishers and journalists, across borders, have grasped the many advantages of this new approach, called “constructive journalism” and who have decided to tell the news in a new way, able to give readers confidence, telling stories on how problems can be solved by reporting successful cases of similar difficult situations already solved by others in the past.
It is not a question of sweetening reality, nor of looking only at the reverse of the coin, but of telling the facts as they really are, contextualizing them in a broader framework, capable of providing a more understandable and solution-oriented vision, as well as the problem. . Only in this way will it be possible to restore credibility to journalists and the media, and confidence in the future that awaits us.
During the training, case studies, practical examples, and successful media experiences that have decided to invest in this new journalism approach will be presented.
